BT tests 10km broadband 12:46PM, Monday 19th April 2004
BT will soon begin trials to test the viability of providing 512Kbit broadband services to homes and businesses up to 10km away from their exchange, measured along the phone line.

Current ADSL services extend to approximately 6km, having only recently been extended from 5.5km. New BT research coupled with the experience of other countries suggests that there may be a way of successfully extending this further without too much signal degradation.

The trial is due to start on 1 June and will take place in Milton Keynes, where 18 per cent of the population are currently too far from an exchange. Residents in the 01908 telephone code area can register their interest in taking part in the trial at www.bb4mk.org/bttrial. BT is currently sounding out ISPS that would be willing to run the trial services.

The service will be tested on lines up to and beyond 10km. BT does not expect them all to work, but says that the wide range of tests will enable it to set a reliable level of service that will bring broadband to a million more premises across the UK.
