UK company encrypts mobile calls 10:44AM, Tuesday 6th May 2008
A British start-up company has developed an encryption technology to prevent people listening in on mobile phone calls.

While voice encryption technology is already available from companies such as General Dynamics, Cellcrypt is hoping to carve a niche for itself by bringing the price down.

"The traditional markets for these sorts of security tools were senior managers of companies and those in Government. But we're trying to

tap into the larger enterprise market by bringing the price point down," says a Cellcrypt spokesperson.

Key to this strategy is the company's use of a VoIP software client, rather than hardware, which installs on a mobile phone and offers RSA 2,048 bit and AES 256 bit encryption of calls.

The technology currently works on Nokia handsets, though the company is also developing support for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry users. Ultimately the company says it's hoping to broaden the appeal of voice security products, in a market that's becoming ever more security consciousness.

That doesn't mean this is the solution for home users worried about snooping, however, with prices starting at £650 per unit per year with volume discounts available to enterprises.

Cellcrypt says it is currently looking for further investment as its works on deals with enterprises and Government agencies.
