Phishing emails: how I nearly got caught out

A phishing email popped into my inbox this morning. That’s hardly a rare occurrence, but what was unusual about this one is that I really wasn’t sure, for a moment, if it was malicious or not.

This caught my eye, as I’ve recently returned from overseas travel, and I did (foolishly) log into my account on hotel Wi-Fi without taking any precautions. What if someone had nabbed my login credentials?

Few people will ever know what it’s like to run one of the world’s biggest companies, but for the past few months I’ve had the briefest of glimpses of what it’s like to read the top man’s emails.

No, this isn’t another case of journalists hacking email accounts. As regular PC Pro readers may remember, when Microsoft launched its Outlook.com webmail service a few months ago, I jumped in and quickly grabbed the SteveBallmer@Outlook.com address that Microsoft had somewhat carelessly left vacant.

Outlook.com review: first-look

Outlook dotcom homeIt was only a few months ago that Microsoft asked us to give Hotmail another chance — with fairly disastrous consequences. Now it’s giving up on Hotmail itself, and migrating users to the new Outlook.com.

Is Outlook.com the webmail service that will finally tear us away from Gmail? Here are our first impressions.
