Embarrassing first tweets of our time

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

twitter_newbird_boxed_whiteonblue Whenever someone follows me on Twitter (@timdanton since you ask) I always take a look at their profile and their recent tweets to see if they’d be interesting to follow themselves. (98% of the time I decide against, especially if you’re family.)

What struck me this morning when I took a gander at someone’s Twitter feed, who’d only tweeted around 15 times, is that first tweet. The “hello world” kind of tweet of someone who doesn’t quite know what to say.

Which inspired me to take a look at the first tweets of some of the world’s most famous “tweeters”… (more…)

The Samsung camera that backs up your photos

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

samsung nh100 straight on

Samsung has announced a swathe of cameras at CES, but one in particular caught my eye. Not the Samsung NX11, with its intelligent lenses that allow you to adjust settings on the lens itself; not the WB700 with its astounding/ridiculous 18x optical zoom; but the SH100, which can back up photos wirelessly simply by being close to your PC.

Sony Ericsson Xperia arc review: first-look review

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

Sony Ericsson arc press shot 2It takes something pretty special to make a phone stand out these days, but the Sony Ericsson arc – due for release in the first quarter of this year – achieves this with some aplomb. The main reason is its design: a ridiculous 8.3mm at its thinnest point, its top and bottom gently gain girth to produce the arc of its name.

Samsung TX100 review: first look

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Samsung TX100 sliding netbookI can count the products that have truly impressed me at this year’s CES on one hand, and the TX100 is comfortably in that top five. And arguably this is the best of them all: it’s the only new product that’s made me say “wow”. Silently, of course.

ViewSonic ViewPad 10S

ViewSonic’s just-announced 10in Android-powered tablet – the ViewPad 10s – may not sound too revolutionary, but it has the potential to be a big seller over the coming months.

Sony VAIO F Series 3D laptop review: first look

Friday, January 7th, 2011

F21_H01_B_3Dviewing01Sony may have waited longer than Dr Livingstone for his friends to arrive before releasing a laptop capable of 3D playback, but it’s taken the plunge with gusto at CES this year. The VAIO F Series isn’t just for playing back pre-created 3D content: it can instantly transform 2D video into 3D too.

Hands on with the RIM PlayBook

Friday, January 7th, 2011

RIM PlayBook mainRIM has surprised a few pundits by letting people get hands on with the PlayBook at CES 2011. Being a person myself, I took the opportunity to have a play and, on first inspection, it looks to be a very promising system.

Dell Streak 7 review: first look

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Dell Streak 7 hands onHot on the heels of Dell announcing the Streak 7, I was able to get my hands on the device itself. There’s much to like here, but is it really the 7in tablet the world has been waiting for?

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E220s review: first look

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Lenovo ThinkPad E220s artyThe first thing you’re likely to think when you first set eyes on the ThinkPad E220s is this: it looks fabulous. It takes that iconic black finish Lenovo is famed for and twists it by adding a matte, almost rubberised finish to the lid and the entire chassis.

It’s slim too, and the numerous polished metal highlights – the hinges, the sides of the chassis, the edges of the screen itself – mean it packs a visual impact we’ve certainly never seen from a Lenovo laptop before.
