Meet the first people queueing for the new Apple iPad

Apple announced its latest iPad on March 7, and the world went into predictable meltdown. Two Londoners, though, had a far more simple way of coping with such exciting news – march down Regent Street, plonk down a couple of chairs, and wait.
First in the queue is 21-year-old Zohaib Ali, and he’s sat alongside 18 year-old friend Ali Tarighi. They’re slumped next to the Apple Store’s main entrance, with bags full of fizzy drinks strewn around, and there’s no doubt the two attract plenty of glances in the middle of a busy day.
Zohaib explained that he’s a veteran when it comes to extreme Apple queuing: “I did this for the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2″, he says, and there’s a clear reason why he’s willing to put himself through such a challenge: “because we want to be first”.
So, what’s it like spending a week outside the Apple store? “The staff come out and say hello, and they’re really nice”, says Ali, “and some people come up to us and say good luck, and say they’re coming back to queue later. At night people come up and laugh, and tell us we’re crazy and mad.”
“If we didn’t have the store’s WiFi we’d be screwed”, Ali says – Zohaib has his laptop and iPad 2 out as we speak – but he seems pretty chipper about the prospect of waiting for for almost a week. “Right now it seems that time’s actually going pretty fast.” That doesn’t last, though, with time “slowing right down” as the launch gets closer and the queue grows in size.
Zohaib is understandably excited about the improvements the new iPad brings to the table. “It’s going to be the best one yet”, he says, with the “1080p video recording and retina display” ensuring that it’ll be “a real improvement over last year”.
Ali might be queuing for almost a week, but he’s less impressed with Apple’s updated iPad. “The A5X chip is nice, but quad-core on a tablet is kind of overkill. I’m a little annoyed they’re not adding Flash support, too.”
He’s hardly enamoured with Jony Ive’s famously minimalist design, either. “I think [Apple] could have done more”, he says, saying that Apple has “been a bit lazy with the 4S and the new iPad”.
It’s easy enough to throw words like “fanboy” at Zohaib and Ali – after all, some might say they’re a little too dedicated to the Apple cause, and Zohaib told us it was “Apple or nothing” when it comes to his mobile devices.
Ali, though? He’s not so certain: while he owns an iPhone and an iPad, he confessed to us that he’s actually a big fan of Windows, and of building his own PCs. At least he’s seen sense, then, when it comes to his home computer – even if it’s not quite enough to make him go home and pre-order the new iPad like everyone else.

Apple queueApple announced its latest iPad on 7 March, and the world went into predictable meltdown, with demand already causing delays to orders. Two Londoners had a far simpler way of coping with such exciting news — march down Regent Street on Saturday – that’s 10 March, almost a week before launch – plonk down a couple of chairs, and wait.

First in the queue is 21-year-old Zohaib Ali, and he’s sat alongside 18-year-old friend Ali Tarighi. They’re slumped next to the Apple Store’s main entrance, with bags of fizzy drinks strewn around, and there’s no doubt the two attract plenty of glances in the middle of a busy day.

Zohaib explained that he’s a veteran when it comes to extreme Apple queuing. “I did this for the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2″, he says, and there’s a clear reason why he’s willing to put himself through such a ordeal: “because we want to be first.”

So, what’s it like spending a week outside the Apple store? “The staff come out and say hello, and they’re really nice,” says Ali, “and some people come up to us and say good luck, and say they’re coming back to queue later. At night people come up and laugh, and tell us we’re crazy and mad.”

Apple queue 2

“If we didn’t have the store’s Wi-Fi we’d be screwed,” Ali says. Zohaib has his laptop and iPad 2 out as we speak, and seems pretty chipper about the prospect of waiting for a few more days. “Right now it seems that time’s actually going pretty fast.”

Zohaib is excited about the improvements the new iPad brings to the table. “It’s going to be the best one yet,” he says, with the “1080p video recording and retina display” ensuring that it’ll be “a real improvement over last year.”

Despite Ali queuing for almost a week, he’s less impressed with Apple’s updated iPad. “The A5X chip is nice, but a quad-core GPU on a tablet is kind of overkill. I’m a little annoyed they’re not adding Adobe Flash support, too.”

He’s hardly enamoured with Jony Ive’s famously minimalist design, either. “I think [Apple] could have done more,” he says, adding that Apple has “been a bit lazy with the 4S and the new iPad”.

It’s easy enough to throw words like “fanboy” at Zohaib and Ali — queuing almost a week for a chunk of aluminium and a snazzy screen is certainly extreme, and Zohaib told us it was “Apple or nothing” when it comes to his mobile devices. Ali, though? He’s not so certain: while he owns an iPhone and an iPad, he confessed to us that he’s actually a big fan of Windows and building his own PCs.

So, what do you reckon? Dedicated and entirely sensible, or a crazy waste of time? Let us know if you’ll be queuing or laughing in the comments.

Adobe Flash – what a Muppet?! They don’t deserve the title of Fanboys!

Wow; I don’t think Ali quite has his head screwed on right, does he??

    And yes, pre-order FTW!

The look on those guys faces when they realise that the queue starts on the other side of the door.

I have never seen such a thin story before. It looks like the concept of quality journalism has gone for a burton. Pc Pro you should be ashamed. Honestly who wants to know about some sad individuals who spend all week queuing for a product that only gives a marginal improvement anyway. If this is the state of the British press then what hope for the future of democracy and world peace ;)

You never asked these sad individuals where do they get the money to keep buying Apple’s overpriced products, and the time to spend such a long time sitting outside the store?

If they are students, they’d have the time but not the money (you’d think), if they’re working and have taken holiday to do this, they’re worse than I thought.

Grammar: “First in the queue is 21-year-old Zohaib Ali, and he’s sat alongside…”
    4/10, see me.

Why poke fun at these rather pathetic individuals who clearly have some kind of mental health issues. You wouldn’t poke fun at someone with Down’s syndrome so why do to these people just because their condition has not been given a name?

  13. TheBigM Says:
    March 14th, 2012 at 10:27 am

    @Fred, Zohaib’s condition has a name: Asperger’s syndrome.

@Chris, couldn’t agree more. This blog post is much more superficial, especially due to the questions asked of those boys. Look at http://crave.cnet.co.uk/laptops/meet-zohaib-and-ali-the-guys-at-the-front-of-the-ipad-queue-50007317/

by comparison, there’s a real human story there, explaining why the kid would do such a thing (computers and Apple products are having a positive impact on his life and learning), how the guy next to him takes it in turn with other friends to look after him etc.

PC Pro writers are good at particular type of technology writing which they should stick to. They’re more at the Ars Technica end of the spectrum than the gadget show end.

Not sure why they are complaining about a quad-core chip being overkill. Would they prefer it to be less powerful and are they aware that it will have 4x the number of pixels so it NEEDS to have 4x the power to match the performance of the previous one.

Re 12 – Fred, I think you’ve just contradicted your own point by calling them “rather pathetic”.

    @Fred
Agreed, we really shouldn’t poke fun at SwissMac. The dearie’s making so much of an effort to show us his beloved, blue-covered ipad, after all. I’d wondered where he had disappeared off to.

On another note, he’s not quite the tubby, blond Aryan that I expected from someone named like a Teutonic McDonalds fan.

Is it cynical of me to wonder if they’ve been ‘encouraged’ to sit there by Apple?
Can’t see any other reason why anybody of sane or balanced reasoning would sit around for that long to get anything so trivial as a bit of non-critical blingery.

I can thing of a more interesting question to ask them:
what do they do when they want to go to the loo?

Is it just me or maybe the editing of the article, but:
Not very impressed with the design
    Doesn’t think it’s such a big improvement
Doesn’t see the need for Quad core
And is missing a desired feature (Flash)

So why is this guy spending a week outside a shop for it?

Just no-one tell them Barry Collins had an e-mail saying his was shipped on the day they started queuing.

    I preordered mine for delivery.
Won’t see it until 2nd April apparently but then I’ll be the one sat in my comfy armchair waiting for it to come to me.
Oh and I got a few quid off through an EPP scheme.
And no I am not a Fanboy and I don’t know Swissmac!

  22. Stu Says:
    March 14th, 2012 at 11:40 pm

Yeah, stinks of some corporate ‘encouragement’, they’ve got no reason to sit at the shop for a whole week, and if they did, it would be quashed by their work commitments to earn the money for it. No preorder, no legitimacy to their story.
Same here-got in my pre-order less than 5 minutes after the apple store came online again, very lucky, so I SHOULD be seeing mine friday.
    .
I’m just waiting for them to open up friday morning, and tell the morons that the Apple shop staff snapped up their entire stock!

I echo a previous comment; where do these sad individuals find the time to queue for a week & the money to keep throwing at Apple for its overpriced & over-hyped products? “It’s Apple or nothing” – well done for becoming a corporate sheep – the bosses at Apple will love (but not respect) people like this – they could put out a painted potato & these idiots would buy it!
