IFA 2010: Sony’s first 3D laptop breaks cover in Berlin

Sony’s press conference over at IFA Berlin has just come to a close and, amongst a bevy of 3D-related developments in the consumer technology field, it’s announced its first foray into the 3D-capable notebook market.

Sony 3D laptop prototype

The prototype models on show aren’t physically identical to the models forthcoming in Spring 2011, but as a demonstration of what 3D can bring to the notebook world, you can colour us impressed.

The F-Series chassis will be familiar to eagle-eyed notebook spotters, but with one essential difference: there’s a button to enable and disable 3D at a whim.

The 16.4in Full-HD displays refresh at a staggering 240 frames per second – the Asus-branded 3D models we’ve seen refreshed at just 120hz – and the test videos on show looked simply exceptional. The VAIO-branded laptops use the same Active Shutter glasses as Sony’s Bravia range of 3D-enabled TVs and are entirely interchangeable.

Quality was impressive. The relatively narrow viewing angles resulted in a fairly narrow sweet spot, but apart from a slight shimmering effect – one we’re familiar with from many 3D displays – it looks like Sony has the screen technology down pat.

Sony representatives wouldn’t give any clue as to pricing, or how many pairs of glasses you can expect with each laptop – we’re expecting no more than one each – but we’ll be badgering our Sony contact mercilessly until we can get our hands on the finished article.
