Google and BT offer free website service to British businesses

Get British Business Online

Getting British Business Online is an initiative launched in February by Google, BT and three government agencies with the aim of getting 100,000 more British businesses online at no cost.

The service includes the free  provision of a .co.uk domain name for two years along with a website created using the Google Sites service. Hosting is also free.

The business owner simply fills out a browser-based wizard with setup information, selects a domain name and, after accepting the terms and conditions, their basic website is up and running.

It’s certainly easy enough to use and the terms seem reasonable. The main issue of note is that website owners are not allowed to create sites whose main purpose is to send visitors to other sites or host advertising. You’re also, and more worryingly, giving BT permission to ring you on your mobile.

Once the site has been created, you can edit it using the tools built into Google Sites. Theoretically, this allows you to improve the look and feel beyond the very basic theme applied automatically. I say theoretically because achieving an acceptable look and feel involves endlessly experimenting with the limited selection of built in themes, selecting each element from a drop down list box and editing the settings. Point and click, drag and drop – concepts noticeable by their absence in the Google Sites interface. Given that their target audience is, presumably, the non-technical user, this process is confusing, long winded and limited in its effect.Editing the site: what a masterpiece!

The likely upshot of this initiative is many thousands of new, almost identical, ghost-town websites as enthusiastic converts to the idea of having a website find themselves confused by the process and unsatisfied with the end results. The government, on the other hand, will be able to proclaim its success based on sheer numbers even if the sites themselves are useless.

I’m also unclear about what BT gets out of this – I rather suspect I’ll find myself on the receiving end of some marketing over my mobile phone in the coming days…

What are the alternatives? For the entirely non-technical, 1&1 MyBusiness Site is a good choice but it does cost £9.99 per month. Otherwise, my favourite low cost solution is to get a cheap hosting package from a reliable supplier such  as Zen Internet that includes the control panel cPanel. Ask your supplier if they include a tool called Fantastico – this allows you to install Wordpress with a couple of clicks. You can then choose and install a free theme from amongst the many thousands available. Wordpress is a much better content management system than that offered by Google Sites so, in the long run, you’re much more likely to keep the site up to date.

Overall, a good idea crippled by a poor implementation. Google Sites will, no doubt, be improved over time but for now it’s far too hard to achieve a good end-result, especially for the non-technical and, in most cases, Wordpress remains a superior choice.

I set up a one and one account for my dad’s building business, and it only cost £1.99 a month. you’re limited to 8pages but you get 20 webmail addresses and more so it’s not all bad. Also the limit is only on the amount of pages their website builder will work with, for you, you can if you want create more pages using another editor and upload them to the site. You also have to pay for the domain name separately. but still for a year with domain name/web hosting & creation/20 web based email addresses for only £32.87 a year. no hassles. all set up and working in 30mins. A little less than you have indicated.

It’s not the prettiest nor the most technically advanced but works and is very low maintenance. Just what the doctor ordered.

i tried setting up a google sites page about a month ago and it’s terrible. it’s easier to use coffee cup and edit a css page than it is to figure out how to resize your logos and images in the sites format. their editor isn’t really wysiwyg and the templates are very very few and lacking.

I’ve been using freevirtualservers and heart internet for years with no problem. The google site may be free but you get what you pay for with a site design that looks 10 years old.

Hmmmm, Aside from the issues of ease of use etc. What about how it may effect the web design industry? And in particular (given the type of business that will be using this server) the freelance web-designs and developers out there?

It could steal potential revenue from smaller start ups (and ultimately the British Government would be shooting themselves in the foot), equally it may make people think, this is crap, I need to get the professionals in.

Time will tell! Happy to discuss this further and swap ideas on twitter :)

A simpler solution for all you businesses out there is to get an instant web presence with FreeIndex. You can create a detailed page about your business with photos, reviews and offers in minutes.

On top of that, you can also get emailed (and search) for relevant jobs in your area. It’s a well kept secret.

Oh, and did I say it was 100% free for life?

Good thing is I can trust BT they did a great job on my site which gets found I have everything a business could ask for, I paid over £1000 for my Premium Design with 8 pages which included SEO I must admit I was sceptical at first but received a healthy ROI from it.

I’ve registered for this for a start-up via this offer but am stuck getting a custom email address for the site, for example, info@business.co.uk but having logged into Google Sites I cannot seemed to find anything that enables me to do this. It’s useless if they only provide the domain with a few pages without a facility of providing the domain with email facility to make it a bit more professional. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so how?
