There's clearly a strong tie in with Web 2.0 and I'm planning a follow-up that should help make that clearer by looking at the fundamental shift from meta keyword to tag. However I think the changes aren't just tied to social sites but are part of a broader shift away from the old impersonal, oppositonal seo (essentially optimizer vs google as machine / black box) to a new seo where optimizer and google work more openly and together to help users (ie humans) find the content they are after.

And I don't think "SEO 1.5" is quite as catchy :)

I think this article is poorly titled. It really should be called "The Guiding Principles of SEO 1.5". I am of course assuming that "2.0" is a reference to Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is centered around the more social aspects of the internet (social netoworking, social bookmarking, wikis, etc.). Search engines are already starting to look heavily at how to properly index and display information from these types of Web 2.0 sites. SEO 2.0 is really more related to that type of thing.

Thanks for the follow up Tom! I think the most important difference of SEO and SEO 2.0 is the goal. In SEO 2.0 you want to attract the human being behind the engine or even directly via social media (and other "search engines").
