Give me a chance. This is just a broad introduction and I plan to return to the difference between seo 1.0 and 2.0 in more depth in the near future. In the meantime here's a useful checklist http://seo2.0.onreact.com/seo-vs-seo-20-top-15-differences

Have you actually searched and researched the phrase SEO 2.0? While the Starter Guide was overdue after years of Google black box policy SEO 2.0 is neither new nor has Matt Cutts anything to do with it.
The most accepted definition of SEO 2.0 is the one coined by Lee Odden in mid 2007.

Definitely agree with the importance of up-front research before you start. I think the most useful tip in the whole guide is the link to the Adwords Keyword Tool where you can see approximate searchword volumes and where Google itself suggests fruitful keyword variations (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal). You can then build that knowledge into your body text, description, title and url structure.

Google's SEO Startet Guide is exactly that - a starter guide.

The great oracle is very careful about what information it actually releases and only time and experience will eventually prevail in your bid to be successful.

There are some amazing White Hat SEOers out there - but you can Do it Yourself with careful guidance. The biggest tip is "research, research, research" your competitors, keywords and products carefully before embarking on designing your website.
