Whoa - spooky Dave somehow managed to reply to my comment before I posted it!

I was just going to suggest that if you're lazy (like me) another quick and dirty way to punch up a picture is with Photoshop's "Adjust Shadow/Highlight" tool, which stretches out the histogram in under- and over-exposed areas to improve the contrast and bring out more detail. You don't get as much control as with the full "Adjust Curves" tool, and the results can be a bit lurid if you apply them to the full frame. But used selectively it's a brilliant time-saver.

I did think it was only in the full version of Photoshop (under Image | Adjust | Shadow/Highlight), but as our resident clairvoyant has already pointed out, it's also in Photoshop Elements. Bonzer.

In fact it's in both: in Photoshop Elements you can go to Enhance | Adjust Lighting | Shadows/Highlights...

I can't seem to find a specific shadows/highlight tool in the GIMP, though. Anyone?
