It may have been the fastest laptop (though the W700 from Lenovo at that time was not much slower, and only then in 3D) but it certainly wasn't the prettiest.

What's with the 6GB of RAM? 4GB will work in synchronous mode while the other 2GB RAM will run in single-channel mode so less bandwidth. Strange, they should have just installed 8GB RAM (i.e. 2x 4GB SODIMM's).

Oh well.

So, let me get this right. We have a laptop that’s a fairly good replacemnet for a desktop but is too heavy to be carried around – so very likely to remain deskbound.

If you’re happy to have a desk permanently taken up with the clutter of a Desktop PC, then by all means go ahead. It will, of course, provide a better price/performance ratio than any laptop. Power, upgradeability, versatility – a desktop PC wins on all counts.

Paolo, this blog was written over 3 months ago, so I wouldn't be surprised if the top-end has got even faster. I'm certainly looking forward to taking a look at a laptop with Nvidia's latest GTX 280M graphics, that's for sure.

However, I should probably mention that your system isn't actually likely to be any quicker, and in many applications - particularly games - it's going to be significantly slower.

Firstly, quad core processors are, for most applications, no better than similarly clocked dual-core parts, and secondly, your two 9800M GTXs are actually significantly slower than the ATI graphics in the Asus.

Good try, though!

This is NOT the fastest laptop on earth...
My laptop has:
1 XEON QUAD CORE x3370 clocked at 3Ghz updatable to the x3380 (coming out soon),
4 GB of RAM DDR2 CL4 at 800 Mhz
3 SATA 2.0 Discs 7200 RPM (with 32Mb cache each) working in AHCI
2 nVidia GeForce 9800M GTX (with 1GB of GDDR3 RAM each card, so 2 GB GDDR3 total
1 HQ Audio card 7.1 (with sampling capabilities up to 192Khz - studio quality) and compatible with ASIO4ALL driver for a very low latency performaces

Please PC/PRO stop using unbelievable titles for your articles, which may damage also brands like Asus!

This is nothing more than a flextronics DW840 DI shell configured by Asus. I just spec'd one with an 80GB X25-M, 320GB 7200RPM scratch drive, Q9000 4GB DDR3, and it came in a hair under $2,600. This is a true desktop replacement piece.

I don't understand why you don't get tower cases with built in monitors. Such a thing would be almost as sensible as this laptop.
