When I was at University me and my flat mates used to go to the back of various departments and see what we could scavenge - industrial racking, bits and pieces for media centre PCs and antique Apple Macs. We'd play with is, use it for what we could, and usually re-release it into the wild at the end of term. Have you ever though of going dumpster diving?
