Welcome to the Spy Coin

I’m giddily excited by the new Bond films, but I can’t help thinking they’re missing a vital ingredient – gadgets. Well, a little humour, too, but that’s another post for another magazine…

Q is gone; retired, defected, laid off in the latest round of redundancies – who knows – but he’s taken his wacky inventions with him, and the Government obviously didn’t keep the IP.

Daniel Craig’s Bond might be hard as nails, and pretty handy in a bare-knuckle fight to the death, but he’s nothing compared to Roger Moore armed with a magnetic watch – that thing took off a girl’s dress using the power of magnetic fields, for god’s sake.

So, I’ve been looking around online at what spy gear can be had by Joe Public. Sure, you can buy some impressive electronic bugs, wireless cameras and the like – the sort of stuff that real MI6 spooks probably use – but the one thing that really caught my attention was the Spy Coin.

These are made from two similar coins; one’s hollowed out, and the other’s cut down to create a lid. The join is completely seamless to the naked eye, and you can hide stuff in the interior. Micro SD cards, for example.

Imagine that: 16GB of data easily smuggled through international borders or past company security desks. I want one. I need one. I have to fill out my childish, Jonny Mnemonic fantasies that were implanted by William Gibson in my youth.

In fact, whoops, I just ordered one. It’ll be my brother’s Christmas present (don’t worry, he doesn’t read PC Pro), but I’m sure he’ll let me play with it.

Just give the data to a civil servant, they’ll get it past security for you… Although you may never see it again… :-D

Hollowed out coins? Whatever next? Empty banks? Oh no, we’ve done that one already.
