What type of person are you?

Acer splits the IT populationThere’s a continual attempt from political parties and big companies alike to define the population, and Acer is the latest to unveil its thoughts. So the question is, do you recognise yourself in any of the below?

Techno Leader
Is very advaned in technical matters. He knows what he wants: “The best and up-to-date”. He wants best performance and he is not price-sensitive. And – he can afford it. He is affluent and young.

Techno Rational
Shares the same positive attitude towards technology as Techno Leader, but his comparatively lower income makes him less ready to pay a premium for brands.

Conventional
Can be seen as a “follower”. He looks at what his neighbours have and buys the same as long as the brand is known and fulfils basic design criteria. He is young and uses the computer more than others for online meeting portals.

Practical and Value
Is a “no-frills” person. He does not use the computer intensively. He doesn’t care about brand. It has to be simple and very cheap. Consequently he seeks discounts and buys in independent stores. Many live in single households. This segment is found often in Germany.

Simple and Easy
Is “helpless”. This segment needs computers, but has very limited knowledge. Computers should be easy to use, no extras are required. Trusted brands give them some reassurance and they are willing to pay more for a hotline. Is much older than average and many are female.

Trendy
Also values simplicity for computers and cares a lot abou the brand she purchases. He is also younger and more sensitive to design than the Simple and Easy segment.

The trouble with these market segmentation categories is that you can easily end up finding yourself ticking more than one box. Or perhaps they need a new category for me: Techno Nutter.

Yip, I’m a mixture of the first four!

I notice the first four categories are male and the last two female. There are some categories missing. Altogether a useless analysis.

I think they always try and define a little too much – eg detailing income in Techno Leader and Rational is too simple. I’ll pay for quality if the product’s right but I won’t pay money just for the sake of a badge, and I’ve been the same throughout my working life – it hasn’t mattered what income I’m on at the time.

    Ditto what Tim Danton said.

My brother currently wants a 60 inch plasma tv, but the mark-up compared to a 50 inch (which he already has) is ridiculous. He earns a massive wage, so can afford it if he wants without any problem, but doesn’t value it as highly as the current asking price. He doesn’t care about brand, just the best product for the job, at a reasonable price.

I wonder what Apple’s sales are like in Germany?
