First look: Sony VAIO Z-Series
The Z-Series sits near the top of Sony’s VAIO range, aiming to attract executives who want to cut a dash in the boardroom.
And it certainly does make for a fine figure of a laptop. Weighing just under 1.5kg – thanks in part to a carbon fibre chassis – it measures a mere 33mm tall.
The screen is more interesting than most too. As with other slimline VAIOs, it uses an LED display, but Sony makes full use of the 13.1in display to squeeze in a full 1,600 x 900 resolution.
Another nice touch is that Sony reduces the amount of reflection by adding an extra coating. Certainly in the hall where I was grappling with the laptop, reflections were noticeably reduced.
Below the display you’ll find a small button: shift it left and the Z11 heads into Stamina mode; shift it right and it goes into Speed mode. This isn’t a new feature – we’ve seen it before in the SZ series – but it is useful if you need to eke out extra minutes.
The Sony representative I spoke to reckoned you can get an extra 45 minutes of life by switching to Stamina – which lowers general power requirements and also switches from the Nvidia graphics chip to an Intel option – but we’ll put those claims to the test when we get the laptop for full testing.
Most UK models will also include an embedded 3G modem, with support for HSDPA naturally. You get a 30-day trial of T-Mobile’s Web’n'Walk in the box, and can either choose to continue with this after the trial or slip in your own choice of SIM.
As with most of the new VAIO models, the Z-Series also uses the “isolation” keyboard, referring to the fact the keys have a large amount of space around them. We prefer to think of this style as a Scrabble keyboard, for obvious reasons.
To me, a slightly haphazard touch typist, it’s a mixed success. It didn’t slow me down, and the keys felt nice to the touch, but I breathed a sigh of relief when I returned to my ThinkPad’s keyboard.
That said, I can see the argument that those with longer fingernails will get on much better with an isolated keyboard than a conventional choice.
Impressively for such a small laptop, the Z-Series packs in a powerful dual-core processor: the bottom of the range (Z11MN/B) uses a 2.26GHz Intel P8400, the top of the range (Z11VN/B) a 2.53GHz P9500. Add 4GB of RAM as standard and you’ve got something of a powerhouse.
As such, the Z11 should easily cope with even demanding applications, and Sony offers a fully featured docking station so you just need to drop the VAIO into place when at work.
As the price reveals, this is a laptop for top executives rather than for mass roll-out: the VGN-Z11VN/B will cost £1,489, the Z11WN/B £1,404 and the Z11MN/B £1,234 (all exc VAT).
But it looks to be an excellent laptop that may well justify its asking price. We’ll get one in to the PC Pro Labs for proper testing soon.

Hello there,
Any chance to find out when/if a Blu-Ray model will be available in the UK, as it is in the US? Thanks!
July 17th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
A very good question. I’ll ask.
What I can tell you with 97% certainty is that it won’t be for a few months, as none of the European countries currently offer the Z-Series with a Blu-ray drive. Looks like it’s US only at the moment.
When I get a definitive answer, I’ll post it here…
July 17th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Great, thanks! I guess the same goes for SSD options (also available in the US, but not with the BR model). Too bad the US models don’t have the right 3G chip (Sprint instead of HSDPA), or I would be ordering there…
July 18th, 2008 at 9:34 am
I’ve had a response from Sony: “There are no current plans to include Blu-ray as an option on the Z-Series. The focus of the Z-Series is as a business PC in the UK, and we don’t see any great demand for Blu-ray from a business perspective at this time.” That’s from Chris Trewhitt, VAIO business product marketing manager.

Looks like a great laptop. How soon can consumers buy one in the UK?
July 18th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Hi Tim,
I am travelling to the UK Next week and will be there till End August, tell me will the Sony VAIO VGN-Z11VN/B be available in the shops by then and do you think the price will be a little less than what is quoted above(I will be based in the Midlands will i be able to get it there or would i need to buy it in London)
Secondly would one be able to add a blue ray drive at a later stage and will they be sold seperately.
Thanx
Akif
July 18th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Hi – there will almost certainly be Blu-ray drives you can add in at some point (I’m basing that on the fact the US version already include Blu-ray).
I can also confirm that the Z-Series will be available from the 4th of August. Apologies, I should have mentioned that in the first look itself! I’ll update this now…
Will the price be lower? Almost certainly, but difficult to say by how much. I can’t see any reason why you won’t be able to buy it in the Midlands somewhere.
July 19th, 2008 at 11:06 am
Thanx for the info Tim…another few questions if you don’t mind,
on the US website the keyboard is black…is this carbon fibre? or the same allumium just in black? Would this make a difference to the weight of the laptop.
Secondly is it true that on the US models, the 3G card would not work on UK/African mobile networks because of different frequencies? As i am tempted to order it from the USA looking at the spec (i like the all black look and the blu ray dvd) By the way i would be using it in southern africa where i reside presently.
Thanx again
July 19th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
First of all thanks Tim for your answer re Blu-ray (although you like me seem certain that there will be blu-ray at some point, the question is when!).
Re Akif question about 3G, the WWAN module in US models is EVDO (Sprint) therefore it won’t work in the UK (and most probably on African networks if they use the same standard as in Europe) as we use here HSDPA, which indeed operates on different frequencies. Changing the Sim Card won’t be enough, the whole WWAN module has to be replaced (not advised unless you really know what you’re doing and don’t mind voiding your warranty)
July 19th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

July 20th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Thanx Manni i thought there would be a problem as out here we use similar GSM networks as you do in the UK/Europe, basically it is 3 or 3.5G that operates on UMTS.
What of the keyboard???? Tim perhaps you could shed some light on this as i do like the all black look….also i think Shafik has a similar question on Weight…..please let me know.
Thanx

Hi all – I’ll hopefully be getting the UK laptop in my hands later this week, and as soon as I do I’ll try and answer these comments!
July 21st, 2008 at 11:22 am
Will the UK be getting a SSD option? If nto soon, is the hd user servicable so that ti could be swapped out for a ssd without voiding the warranty?
July 21st, 2008 at 12:07 pm
I’m also interested in both SSD and Blu Ray options. I don’t see how the US and UK laptop markets can be so differentiated as to make it good sense for them to not include these options for us Brits?
If the price of the top model is about £1500 then I could maybe deal with adding an SSD later, as the top SZ models normally have been going for about £1900, have they not?
Also, is 4GB RAM the max? (only needed for running VMWare etc). And, related to this, will there be a Vista 64 bit OS option?

I have to say, lack of Blu-ray is disappointing (as if I can afford it anyway, but I can dream..) Something else I would like to confirm – you say “You get a 30-day trial of T-Mobile’s Web’n’Walk in the box, and can either choose to continue with this after the trial or slip in your own choice of SIM” but the T-Mobile page (http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/uk/sonylaptop/?WT.mc_id=sonylaptop) says “Enjoy 30 days free unlimited internet access on your new Sony VAIO when you sign up to any web’n'walk Plus or Max plan” which gives the impression that you only get 30 days free IF you sign up for a contract.
July 22nd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Can Sony confirm if the 128GB SSD will be available in any UK model? If not, what would the warranty situation be if I were to import the top-end model from the US? Basically I’d want to buy the VGN-Z11VN/B but with the SSD instead of the 300GB HDD.
Also: American buyers get the benefit of “fresh start” where Sony remove all the trial and bloatware – any chance of Sony UK being similarly enlightened?
July 23rd, 2008 at 8:17 am
Indeed….. the seeming lack of custom build options in the UK is disappointing. Even though I’d prefer to wait for SSD prices to fall rather than drop $1200 to upgrade to an SSD right now, I’d still like the option of the 7200rpm HD that the US gets, rather than what seems to be 5400rpm drives here….
July 23rd, 2008 at 10:13 am
Also, the UK specs list DDR2 memory rather than DDR3. I hope that’s a typo rather than a cost saving measure they hoped we wouldn’t notice!
July 23rd, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Ah, and does the UK version include the Windows XP ‘downgrade’ DVD that others seem to ship with?
July 30th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Hi Tim…..have you got the laptop yet? I am now in the UK and would love to hear your comments on my questions above
July 30th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Laptop hasn’t arrived yet – I’ve been assured that as soon as samples arrive we’ll be getting one…
@S Yes, XP downgrade disc will be in the box.
July 30th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Hi Tim, thanks for you answer on XP. Look forward to reading the review. S
August 4th, 2008 at 6:22 am
Hi Tim,
I would like to buy the computer, but I need it to run windows xp. Therefore, I am very much interested in getting to know, if the windows xp downgrade version functions well on the computer. It would be rather disappointing to notice that after switching to windws xp some drivers would not work and I could not use e.g. the camera.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get an answer form sony on that.
Bye
Walter
August 4th, 2008 at 8:12 am
I read that there’s a couple of zip files to download from the Sony support site which contain all of the drivers for XP (supplied on a best endeavour basis), although of course no one has been able to try them out yet. If Sony have to repair an XP Z though it will come back with Vista on it, apparently. S
August 4th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
just noticed these are up on sonystyle.co.uk. Models appear to be exactly as Tim reported, unfortunately. No Blu Ray and no SDD. Gutted. £1749 is incredibly expensive for a laptop with a 5400rpm HDD. I have no need for 320 GB on an ultra portable laptop!
I guess they may release different models over here in the coming weeks – thoughts? I.e. is this something Sony have done in the past with the SZ?
August 5th, 2008 at 9:23 am
@Col:
I feel exactly the same about the storage – who needs 320Gb of storage (and slow storage at that) on the road? Surely the Z is all about lightweight, fast, power-concious computing. My large files can live on the NAS or on the server, I just need a lightning quick system disk for on the road.
Come on Sony – give SSD to the UK, it’s the only thing stopping me from ordering the top model!
August 6th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
I’ve noticed conflicting information on the RAM type.
Sony Style reports it as DDR2, while the main sony.co.uk advises DDR3.
Anyone know for sure which it is?
It is a shame that such a high spec laptop will only have a 5400rpm drive, but perhaps the fact that it is 320gb will mean it is fairly high density, which may help negate the slower RPM. But then again, why provide high-end components and not a high RPm hard drive/SSD? Hmm… Some of this doesn’t make sense.
I think blu-ray for most shouldn’t be an issue. This is a business laptop primarily. But it shows the two-tier system between US and Europe, particularly with the lack of SSD.
August 6th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
The UK site and pdf specs originally said DDR2 then it was changed to DDR3 as per the spec in other countries so presume this is now correct (and Sony Style is wrong).
I don’t mind too much about the SSD as it’s so expensive right now, but it would be great to be able to swap one in later when cost and performance are likely to have improved. Will this void the warranty I wonder…..
August 10th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Agree with Jamie, I’m not fussed at all about bluray, I just want SSD. In fact, looking at the US configure to order site, you can’t have SSD and bluray in the same machine anyway.
August 12th, 2008 at 9:31 am
Tim,
Any news on when you expect to receive the Z laptop for review?
Cheers……….
August 12th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Hi – I’m chasing Sony on a regular basis! We’ve been promised the first full retail units, but our sister title iGIZMO had a pre-production unit in that I’ve been playing with. Looks excellent too. If you want to take a look, head over to http://www.igizmomag.co.uk and click on the top-right hand corner of the page to see the latest issue.
August 12th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Ordered one from Sony Style only to be told, and I quote “I have just been told that the new Z range has been delayed by 10 days. There was a lorry that crashed carrying our first batch of laptops, and therefore the whole range has been delayed until the 21st.”
Lol!
August 14th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Chaps….any news on the launch date as i leave the UK end next week and really wanted to get my hands on the VGN-Z11VN/B…..Tim……is this lorry crashing true, or is it just another one of sony’s usual delaying ploys! I have been checking the sony shops and they mentioned that they would only hit the shelves early september
( Please help
August 14th, 2008 at 11:30 am
By the way had a look at the igizmomag….but thats the WN/B not the VN/B
which i was told will be out earlier than the VN/B
August 14th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Hi Chaps – I ordered mine from Japan through http://www.conics.net – They order it through Sony’s Vaio Owner Made outlet which means you can customise your pc, including english keyboard and Vista os.
Put my order in last week and hope to recieve by the end of the month,
My spec is –
2.8ghz core 2 duo – yes, 2.8ghz!
Nvidia 9300
++WUXGA screen 1600 x 900 (in japan its available in a lower res format too)
4gb ram
blueray recordable drive
Vista home
large battery (yes, this is part of the cutomization)
HSDPA (onlu usable in Japan though)
botanical garden finish – only available in japan (choice of 3 cover patterns)
Ive bought several pcs from conics and they are both ve4ry reliable and good value, charging ony a small commission.
hope that helps you guys – I used to feel like you are feeling before I shopped internationally. Now im ahead of the game. What are sony thinking of marketing the z as business only mahine in the uk – thats what the bx is. Its a tz on steroids.
But maybe thats the real reason – the TZ is a massive seller for sony – plenty of milking in the UK to be done still
August 14th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Sorry, missed off – I went for 32ogb 5400rpm drive.
If you select the 128gbssd there isnt enough room inside the pc to have the blue ray drive, so you can ony select dvd drive. Plus its very pricey.
Ive used ssd before – my TZ was 64gbssd and 200gb hard drive combination, and in my UX and OQO. Where the processor is slower – ie. 1.33ghz – it makes a real difference, but in my Vaio AR where the processor was 2.5ghz with 4gb ram its not really noticeable – vista individuallyb scored 5.4 on ssd in my TZ and UX, but on my AR with 5400rpm drive the score was higher at 5.9.
This is a new ssd format which is even faster – but where you have the new ddr3 ram and big processor – I think the speed of ssd will be lst somewhat on vista capability.
Its going to be fast, ssd or no ssd 128mb isnt much space on what for me will be main machine – yes I can have an external drive, but it defeats the object.
Hope my experience and thoughts helps.
August 20th, 2008 at 11:13 am
Hi Jon (last poster), the info regarding conics.net is a real find if it is legit! I have been trying to decide between the Z series and the new E-series latitude for the last week. If it is possible to order a Z series with both Blu-ray and a 7200rpm drive from this website then I think I will take that route. Did you have to pay much Vat and import duty when having it delivered from Japan?
August 21st, 2008 at 8:09 pm
I just purchased a VGN-Z11VN/B and the least I can say is that I am not impressed. I tried downgrading to Windows XP. Beside the facts that it requires to do the process twice to be able to partition the disk, the only driver available on the CD is for the ethernet card. The Z model is not even available on sony’s website, therefore it is impossible to install any of the drivers (not to mention the supposedly bundled softwares…) And the hotline does not work after 6pm. I am left with a machine that can barely display internet explorer.
August 22nd, 2008 at 7:13 pm
@Charles – where did you get your VN? I’ve not seen anywhere listing anything other than undated pre-orders at the moment.
August 23rd, 2008 at 7:48 pm
@Howard – They hit the shops last Monday. I’m very happy with mine – a beautiful piece of kit. I’m going to wait for the drivers before trying XP though. They’re on the Asia site though, but not sure if any bits are different on their machines……. S
August 23rd, 2008 at 9:28 pm
alright, lads?
@s how much did u get your VN? where from? sonystyle?
also, anybody found anywhere where we could get any of the models for really cheap online? conics.net is pretty expensive, as the base model is pretty basic. add to that the possibility of paying VAT, i’m not sure about the whole thing – £2000 – crazy!
August 24th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Sorry GREG, I lef a post before, but it didnt seem to stick for some reason as I relise its not here!!
Conics are legit and very reliable – have used them several times. THere is a 7200rpm 200hd option. Customs wise, I would factor it in to be safe – it doesnt qlways happen, but it can!
SAM – The benefit of Conics is that you can buy a customisble model, considerably higher spec than the UK version. For example – mine is 2.8ghz, oh and of course the blue ray option. Not sure why you would buy this as a basic model either….you would be better off buying a different pc if just want sometihng cheap.
Hey Charles, Im wondering why youre going XP when the machine is way capable of handling vista…do you still have driver compatbility issues with other peripherals?
August 25th, 2008 at 2:09 am
My Vaio Z90 – Customised from Japan
Sony Vaio Type Z, BluRay Option [3 yr warranty]
- 1st Battery Sony 12-17 hr Large (plus25quid) You can buy the large one as standard in the PC. (Large battery not even listed on the Sony Site!)
Colour Botanical Garden – NOT AVAILABLE TO UK (etched cover design – very stylish- plus25quid)
- CPU Core 2 Duo T9600 (2.8GHz)- NOT AVAILABLE TO UK (plus 205quid)
- Hard Drive 320GB 5400RPM
- Keyboard Standard (JP international)
- LCD WXGA (1600×900) 256MB VRAM
- Memory 2x 2GB (4GB total) 3GB under 32bit Vista
- Optical drive Blu-Ray Multi-Burner – NOT AVAILABLE TO UK (plus 255quid)
- Security Fingerprint sensor & TPM
- Warranty 3 year warranty
- Web Camera 310K Pixel Motion Eye Internal
- Windows Version English Vista Home Premium
Cost = 1899pounds + posting about 40quid plus possible vat charge – 332 pounds
Cost of top UK model is1749quid – the Japan model has 325pounds worth of extras on it think for blue ray, large battery, designer look and faster processor, thats pretty good value – which for me has really made the pc worth while – 500pounds more expensive than the UK model if you get charged tax.
BUT, worth noting again that I have been able to include the large battery as standard – not listed as available on the Sony site – a large battery for the UK TZ costs- 248pounds – this is comparable life of 11-18 hours. Thus making it only 252pounds more expensive – and if you manage to avoid customs….well, you are actually quids in.
Expensive, purchase yes, but pretty good value actually – as well a having something a whole lot more special.
Im just waiting for Fedex to deliver it….should be here anytime now ;D
August 25th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Hi Jon,
Thanks for the reply!
I’ve been on to Brett at http://www.conics.net too and am thinking of pulling the trigger too shortly
Let me know how it looks when it arrives! Why did you go for the JP key board instead of the US option. Isn’t the US closer to the one we have over here?
Gregg
August 26th, 2008 at 4:00 am
Hi Greg,
I got mine yesterday, and have to say that I am really impressed with the build quality – the keys have some weight to them compared to the TZ and feels more robust. The botanical garden pattern looks really cool too. Performance wise it scores a Vista 4.4 – surprisingly aero is the lowest score, but graphics are 5.1. Ram with the new ddr3 is a whopping 5.9, my processor is 2.8ghz – with a 5.6 vista score, and the HD is 5.5. I went to the Nvidia site and did a compatability check with the game called Crysis which is regarded as a top end intensive graphics game and it passed with a reccomended rating.
The screen is great, it feels so wide – tested it out and its nice and sharp too. The unit is both smaller and lighter than I thought it would be – and I used to own a TZ. Battery life on speed with full bluetooth / wireless is just over 5 hours (with the big battery) I switched wireless off and set the screen to 75% and it went up to 7 hours. I havent tested it on stamina yet – it is suposed to be 11-17 hours which I would equate to 9hours real usage (comparing to TZ) .
I bought mne in its original Japanese state – Im ok with using Jap os and do travel to Japan.
Keyboard wise – there isnt much difference as it is a JP INTERNATIONAL keyboard – the space bar is smaller to make way for 2 buttons to the right, and one button to the left – you wont use these buttons. There are also hiragana characters on the keys underneath each letter of the qwerty keyboard which again, you wont use as Brett will map the keytboard for ENglish. So if you prefer a larger spacebar, thats all you are really paying for! Other than that, its just like any other keyboard. Oh, the @ mark is in a different position – next to the letter “P” – I actually prefer this, but it is what you are used to that matters
THis is without doubt the nicest looking vaio Ive seen (and Ive owned a few!) – oh, almost forgot to mention, Vaio media now lookslike the PS3 / PSP media bar which is nice.
August 26th, 2008 at 4:33 am
Greg,
Forgot to mention – my advice would be to go for the larger battery. The great thing about vaio ownermade is that you can have the large battery instead of a standard battery in your setup – only paying an extra 25pounds.
If you buy the big battery later it is going to cost you about 300quid – and 99% sure you wouldnt use two batteries in anycase.
THe big battery is not available in the UK
The big battery protrudes underneath the pc, raising the back and creating a slight angle – this also has the benefit of making the keyboard more ergonomical to type on.
Cheers,
August 27th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Quick question does the Japanese versions 3G work in Europe?
August 27th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
THe quick answer is no. But there is an express port that can be used with a 3g card instead.
The longer answer is tat it is locked to DoCoMo NTT in Japan. Bit of a mixed view around the net on the actual modual itself as Japan mobiles are way ahead of anybody else.
August 28th, 2008 at 1:15 am
@Jon
Hey Jon, about the Blu-Ray drive in your custom Vaio Z – I’m assuming this means that your Blu-Ray drive is region A (Japan and America) and therefore cannot play Region B Blu-Ray Discs (UK)? Can you check this out? Cheers!
August 28th, 2008 at 1:24 am
Yes you are correct – though being a notebook you do have the option toc hange the region.
The DVD drive will be Japan and UK – but again being a laptop you can change this.
If you keep the settings then you can always import – cheaper and quicker releases;p
September 1st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
@ Jon,
Thanks for that – out of interest which Blu-Ray drive (manufacturer and model number) is Sony using in the Z-Series?
This can be found out by going Device Manager then expanding the CD/DVD drives section (Right click on my computer, Select properties, Select ‘Device Manager’ Double click on ‘CD/DVD Rom Drives’)
I’d be interested to know – many thanks for your help!

Hey Zach – it is a MATSHITA BD-MLT UJ23AS. I had read somewhere that this is a new drive that has not been officially released – however, Sony did a deal to get it into the Z. Given Sony’s innovation and pioneering approach, its credible.
Incidentally, I came across a Z on ebay where the guy says he can mod it for blueray and ssd – but given Sony are specifically not offering this, it seems a bit dodgy. I dont believe Sony’s reasons are around price – in Japan and US you can configure to suit your spec and budget, and its a pretty high end price in anycase. Must be something to do withthe actual workings of the pc (as its not about space inside the pc either). One of lifes great mysteries
Really happy with my Z – definately the best laptop Ive owned and makes the TZ look amateur.

Oh cool is that the UJ232AS (extra ‘2′ in there?) – yea I read about Panasonic developing that – but didn’t realise that any manufacturers had access too it yet! It’s pretty slick!
Is the drive height 9mm or 12.7mm?
Thanks for answereing all my q’s – you’ve been really helpfull!
September 3rd, 2008 at 12:40 am
Hi Zach,
Yep, extra “2″ shold be in there
I tried measuring the drive door from the outside – really difficult to do as it curves around. It is more than 9mm though. Hope that helps

Hi Everybody,
Has anyone tried to install Ubuntu to Z11? I guess it should work perfectly, but the odd sized ++wide screen makes me a bit uneasy. Planning to buy one, but I want to use Linux.
If you get one for the test, maybe you could boot it up once with the Live-Ubuntu?
Cheers, Jukka
September 5th, 2008 at 10:53 am
I’ve booted mine with the Live-Ubuntu disk and it works fine, no problems with the resolution.

Hi DIJ,
can you change from stamina to speed-mode on ubuntu?
have you tested all the Hardware (wifi, lan, fn-functions)?
Thanks

The conics customisation is impressive. I’d be going for the SSD.
I spoke to Sony couple of days ago – they said they customise – but presumably not with SSD or blueray options – I was asking about other unrelated stuff. Maybe worth re-checking with Sony on that.
I want next day on site service – doesn’t look as if that’s included if buying from conics? Anyone got that who has bought from them?:
What I really need is one or two more USB ports but that doesn’t seem to be an option. I’ve got quite a few USB devices which need full power from a direct port or a powered USB hub which irritates me, although when travelling I tend to use a 4 port USB PCMIA card – not an option on the Z series.
Like Gregg, I’ve been trying to decide between the new Dell E series which still isn’t out and the Sony Z series.
September 10th, 2008 at 12:21 am
Great news – just unlocked the3G WWAN in my Z..so it is possible after all!
@Griff – Sony UK dont do ssd or blue ray. Conics order from Sony Japan – but you can only have either blueray or ssd – not both – blueray requires space to buffer loadings. which would not work well with only 128gb ssd.
Ref service, Conics have 3 options in the drop don box but given they are in japan and its a japanese vaio you are buying, what you are asking is pretty unlikely.
Your choice of Dell or Z puzzles me – so very different – up to 2.8ghzC2Duo vs 1.6ghz diamondville processor, up to 128gb flash raid ssd vs 16gb ssd (16gb going to be tough to work with remembering that the OS will take a chunk of it) etc..
Other notebooks you might want to look at are the Panasonic R7, Sony Vaio G or if you go smaller, the Fujitsu FMV-LUB5N (U2010/U820) – this has tablet functionality with a clam shell swivel screen – up to 64gb ssd.
My advice is to think about is what you will use it for and what you will need. 16gb of ssd is a no for me, having used it with the Sony UX – just not workable with so little memory – I reccomend you have at least 32gb ssd and that is still tight. Think about those usb devices – the Z has sd, MS slots, express port, firewire and 2 usbs for storage as well as internal memory. There is also a docking station available. Also think about the ssd – yes its quick, but there is an option for 320gb 5400rpm and 200gb 7200rpm hd against a larger processor. If the processor is small then ssd helps out alot, but with a large processor the difference is minimal – Vista scores – my 2.8ghz processor has 5.6 and the hdd (320gb 5400rpm) has 5.5. I know the ssd has a score of 5.9.
In crystal mark ーmy pc configuration is 107000 vs my same config with ssd =127000 –
This score is driiven by the raw ssd vs hd subscores. In practise with , Vista using prefetch and the fact that ssd does not alter the graphics scores (4.4 aero / 5.1 gaming) the difference is not really going to be noticeable. The reason is the high 2.8ghz processor and 4gb ddr3 ram (vista 5.9).
I love flash, but 128gb is pretty small and losing blue ray with such a fantastic screen seems wrong. I wrestled with this alot, but nowcomfortable in the fact that I have a powerful and fast notebook compared to everything in its class which in this case ssd would only be an icing on an already impressive cake. Price wise you will pay through the nose on the ssd too – 320gb 5400rpm hd and blue ray is much cheaper, but makes the pc more rounded.

Hi Jon,
You are thinking of the Dell Mini, not the Dell E Series. The Dell mini is Dell’s netbook offering released recently. The Dell E series are the new type of Latitude and are Dell’s high end business laptops. Some have been released and the rest are due to come next week The E4300 is probably the nearest to the Vaio Z series. It’s about the same weight with processor options up to the T9600 2.8 GHz Core Duo and up to 8GB of RAM. It looks pretty slick but doesn’t come with a discrete graphics option so I’ll probably go with the Z series. The 12″ model is the E4200 and comes in at less than 1kg.
Regarding getting the SSD and the Blu-Ray drive – the main reason that Sony don’t offer this option (as far as I’m aware) is because the 128 GB SSD is a RAID with 2 x 64 GB drives and the Blu-Ray drive (which needs it’s own heat sink) doesn’t fit. Modders are putting in single SSD drives into the Z series like that guy on e-bay though. Better again, portableone, who are a very reputable reseller delivering all over the world, are also doing this mod for those people who MUST have both
.
SSD is still too pricey for me though!
September 11th, 2008 at 2:54 am
Hi Greg, Yes that certainly makes more sense
My source was a Japan site who are very close with Sony, infact, participating in sessions with the Sony development team – (lIve linked to the right page – its a massive, and perhaps the most indepth review Ive ever seen – comment on ssd / blue ray reason is 3/4 way down)
http://209.85.171.104/translate_c?hl=en&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http://kunkoku.livedoor.biz/archives/51479836.html&usg=ALkJrhjlfWzksZU-XVXyHPDX1fohCT97tg
“There are constraints,
SSD 64GB, or SSD RAID 128GB select only
Blu-Ray disk drive it is not.
This is the largest long to 50 GB Blu-Ray disk KOMOU Even when you write,
Side and temporary storage as a buffer area
64GB will be out of the question, 128 GB too harsh even for the simultaneous selection that regard”
i understand what you say, but surely if that was the case sony would have made the chassis slightly bigger or offered single ssd like they offer different speed HD’S. One for much debate! I would be cautious at least – but you are right, it is very expensive. With the bigger processor and fast ddr3 ram, I dont think a standard ssd would offer any noticeable speed benefits.
September 11th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Hi Jon,
I initially came across a discussion of both possibilites as reasons for no SSD & Blu-Ray simultaneously on notebookforum.com (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=275038). There’s a link to that review you mention in there too. I still wasn’t convinced so I asked a Sony rep and he said that the size of the drive and RAID SSDs was most likely the issue. This made sense to me because Portableone are offering options with Blu-Ray burners and single 2.5″ 128GB SSD (as opposed to the two 1.8″ RAID 64GB offered by Sony).
However, I would guess that the rep was just postulating based on the fact that the website you mention has close ties with sony development and definitely looks more reliable. If this is the case Portableone are just ignoring the buffer problem.
Still though, if the size of the required buffer is indeed the problem then why don’t Sony include the option of a Blu-Ray player, with SSD, i.e., no burner???
It’s all very confusing!
By the way, as you can see from that forum a lot of folks (including me!) are really keen to hear how you unlocked your WWAN
September 11th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Hi Greg,
I think that the blue ray must load and buffer on read as well as write. It cant take up huge amounts of space – but interestingly the translation reads as being “harsh” on the ssd – maybe meaning lots of writing and rewriting which could wear out the ssd alot quicker than an hd due to the limited rewrites ssd has. ie, it thrapes the ssd.
Ok, the WWAN – I used a site called http://www.dc-unlocker.com – simply downloaded the software, ran the program and it detected the module which is an Option Globetrotter GTM378 – then downloaded the Globetrotter software (also provided by them. Bought credits for 15 euros and then went to unlock – it didnt work at first – I went on msn and the chaps there talked me through running a datalog – sent it to them and 10 mins later they sent me some more software and it unlocked.
I bought a prepaid 3g phone sim card (Im in Australia at the moment) – simply put the card in the slot, then open globetrotter – it looks for 3g or Edge/GPRS and has options for enabling pin, entering username, password and apn.
I left the pin as disabled, selected 3g, didnt need to enter username or password and apn was internet – then wow, Im connected – can surf the internet and send sms messages.
I will post it on the forum!

Tim Danton – hello – I was wondering when the PC Pro review is coming out….definately interested on your take on the machine, particularly with reference to the limited spec availability of the UK model vs Japan and US.
September 12th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Hi Jon – if you can bear with me, I should have news on this early next week. Sorry for the delay – as has been documented elsewhere in these comments, there have been a number of problems with shipments with this laptop. We were originally told we’d have a review unit several weeks ago, but due to factors out of our control it hasn’t yet arrived.

Hi, I tried Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 on Z11MRN\B
so both of them at least works on it : )
for 8.04 issues are
camera – when you try to test in skype it’s led turns on and whole system hangs up
wifi – just diesn’t work outofthebox
video – it works but as I understood only Intell card is detected, you still can sitch to nVidia but I did’n undestand what changied : )
sound – even after adding options to alsa-base sound is still playing from internal speakers and headphones out, not separately
for 8.10 results are almose the same, but with video there is bigger issue because after switching stamina/speed and restarting it can’t detect primary device and you have no GUI
September 27th, 2008 at 10:13 am
I’ve installed Ubuntu 8.0.4 on my Z11
As said by Chupan, the resolution is well managed, but wireless and NVidia graphic card are not detected/managed. They are too recent and, at this time, linux specifics drivers don’t exist for these cards
An other issue: the F5/F6 keys (Screen Brightness) don’t work => The brightness is ever set to the maximum (and the Z11 screen brighness is amazing, maybe a litle bit excessive for indoors use when set to maximum)
September 27th, 2008 at 10:30 am
hello There
I would like to know , is it possible to change SATA hard disk drive into SSD in VGN-Z590 ?
Thanks
September 27th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
hi there; (especially Jon)
So much valuable info here. I just wonder if I travel to Japan, instead of ordering from conics, what are the odds I would find the computer of my choice on a store there. I think that way I’d also get a Tax Free reduction. I’m planning to buy a Z90 with 128GB SSD option.
thanks
September 28th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Hi Usame, you might be lucky, but unlikely due to the high expense of the ssd model to other versions.
Please also remember that tax in Japan is only 5%.
You probably wont find this model in the duty free section of the likes of Laox and unless you speak japanese you will find it tough sorting your warranty out – at least Conics prices are reasonably and include warranty.
Think you would be unlikely to find one in Ultimate, probably business version – meaning it would be japanese. im ok with it, but you might find it tough going. Conics will convert to english and sort out the drivers etc.
Hi Arun – I just upgraded the HD in my Z90S – moving to a WD Scorpio Black 320gb 7200rpm HD (from a 5400rpm).
It is definately peppier and now retty fast indeed. IYou need to be delicate in opening it up, but it is pretty straight forward to do. (and Ive never done a mod like this before).
In crystal mark ?my old pc configuration was 107000 vs my same config with ssd =127000. With the 7200rpm drive it goes up to 111800 and vista rating of 5.8. Pretty optimum really.
HD Crystal mark scores – The 5400rpm drive is 5000, with 7200rpm taking it to 10000 – SSD is still lighteningly fast at 25k. I think the7200rpm gives the feel of a fast powerful pc (bearing in mind I have 2.8ghz processor and 4gb ddr3 ram) – but the compromise of ssd is no bluray drive. WithVista bottlenecking, its not going to be a huge leap from where I am now – and that is still pretty impressive.
Be wary that bluray constantly buffers – read / write – this is ok for HD, but will thrape an ssd, drastically reducing its life.
September 28th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
Sorry Arun – yes you can change the sata for ssd – but beware of the blueray.
September 28th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Hey guys;
Thank you Jonfor the reply. I’ve come across this guy on ebay who sell the laptop equipped with both bluray and SSD. From him, actually, you can get 128SSD and bluray option for 4200$, if you opt to have 250GB SSD it’s 4750$ :S OMG
His offer seems quite more reasonable than conics, and cheaper. There’re two downside’s tho:
-2.53 ghz instead of 2.80 (But 25W as opposed to t9600, which is 35W. I dont know how that would affect battery life, any ideas?)
-Color options are NOT available… I would even spend 300 more for the color options, too bad its exclusive to Japan.
opinions/ideas are appreciated…
September 29th, 2008 at 8:49 am
Usame – the downside is that blueray will considerably shorten the life of your ssd – this is why Sony dont offer them as an option. yes it is possible to do the mod, because the drive sizes and connectors are the same – but unless you are ok with the above, my advice is dont.
My new setup with the 7200rpm drive and 2.8ghz processor is faster than ssd in say my old TZ – it feels fast and smooth, even with HD video editing. You could of course wait for some 10,000rpm drives to come along
September 29th, 2008 at 9:02 am
Hi there;
Jon, you’re right, it sure will shorten the life of disk, however, Sony also offers a computer with SSD and bluray ( not Z tho):
TT190UBX: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665511248
It has 256 SSD with bluray. anyway that’s not the point.
I do still wonder how having a 35W cpu instead of 25W would affect battery life. T9600 or P9500, which one is the wiser choice?
And, Jon, does not having a 7200rpm HDD have an impact on battery life and noise levels? Weight?
PS: 10k rpm? Would it be not noisy and hot (literally, hot
) ?
Thanks
September 29th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Hi Usame – gosh yes you are right….havent seen this model and looks like its just come out as its on preorder. Maybe its a typo – they may well be referring to configuration options.
it certainly makes it interesting though – that raid ssd is fast. If its not a typo then it needs some more understanding for sure.
I went for the 2.8ghz processor – when you want grunt, you got it, also future proofing somewhat. You are right in what you say, but the processor draw is only one facet of impacts on battery life. The sreen being of course the highest impact of all. Of course you can limit the cpu in the power meter settings which are pretty comprehensive. I think unless you go for a much lower processor the differences arent going to be that big. I have the big battery too.
My Z is more for desk use, with some mobility use. I just got the new Fujitsu LooxU for ultra mobility which will go for 8 hours or so with wifi and bluetooth on.
HD – I checked things out pretty carefully before making the change. The Western digital uses about the same power as the toshiba 5400rpm hd. I havent noticed ny difference in battery (which makes sense) and its about the same noise wise. Weight is the same. Performance is improved
It behaves like ssd did in my hybrid TZ (HD and SSD). Popping it open is straightforward, but not something Id like to make a habit of.
10k rpm – they are not even available or notebooks yet, but yes I am sure they would require more power.
September 30th, 2008 at 8:25 am
Hi Jon;
I know it’s bin a lot of questions, but you know its a great investment, still there’re questions in my mind.
1- About changing HDD, is it possible to order the cheapest HDD option, then later on change it for a SSD? Will it fit?
2- And, for the optical drive, same question applies. is it possible to order DVD then later on change it for bluray? Are they identical in size? (right now in my country bluray is not quite popular, but they sure will get more popular. I can wait till they get cheaper)
If both answers are YES, then I’ll order cheapest HDD + DVD. Change for SSD and Bluray when needed (and when I’v cash
)
If 1 is YES 2 is NO: Order cheapest HDD + Bluray. Manually change for SSD.
If 1 is NO 2 is YES: Order SSD + DVD. Change for bluray if I ever need it.
If both are NO: Heck, it’s tough decision, then ill have to choose between bluray and SSD – Most probably SSD… (Shouldnt be tho, as the guy on ebay does either 1 or 2 – or he’s a complete fraud. who knows
)
What do you think? And, btw, you’ve been so helpful Jon, I appreciate it.
Thanks…
September 30th, 2008 at 8:27 am
Sorry, forgot to ask, are there better SSD alternatives than those sony put in? Which SSD would you recommend, what’s the deal with raid 0 and having a single SSD?
October 1st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
Hi Usame,
Wow, what a list – ok, easy to do.
1) yes 2.5″ ssd will fit inside and you could swap it – though if it knackers out your ssd quickly, then thats a mighty expensive pc. Whilst its easy to get into the Z, I wouldnt want to do it often – it is open heart surgery afterall!
2) Blueray Drive – the answer is unknown on this – the easiest and safest option is to change the HD I think.
Please remember that popping open the Z will void your warranty!
Unless you know the guy on ebay is reliable – I would avoid it – this purchase is not for the light hearted as it is.
Sounds like you want ssd at all costs and blueray is a bonus. The SSD used in the Z is Raid SSD and twice as fast as standard ssd. Sony Japan are calling it SSD 2. There are some available from Ozcore, but performance and reliability is patchy. And they are dead expensive.
My advice -
You seem to be a speed junkie who sees blueray as a bonus – I would go for the SSD / optical drive offering. You can always hook up to a blueray.
Alternatively,, go for the 7200rpm 200gb HD with blueray – with 2.8ghz and 4gb ddr3 ram – this is a powerful speedy machine – not as fast as SSD2 – but still fast enough for you to feel it. I will say that my 7200rpm drive is comparable with the ssd in my old TZ and outperforms it in vista scoring.
You were right about the TT config – I want to understand why the T can handle it and the Z apparantly cannot – you may wish to consider this instead – it has your dream config of blueray and ssd (256gb of it too!) and will be available withou you having to open it up
October 6th, 2008 at 6:53 am
hi Jon;
You’re right, TT seems like an excellent alternative; tho there are 3 downsides which are quite much important to me..
-Smaller resouliton and screen (why would watch bluray on it?)
)
-Sloooooooower CPU (I dont quite understant the deal with those ultralow voltage cpu s).
-No color options like those in sony japan z series (man i love Gothic Arabesque option
October 6th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
Great news;
On sonystyle japan, iv seen you can order 2×128gb SSD + BLURAY…. hooooorayy.
now is the time for me to save some money
For my lovely new Z….

November 20th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Hey guys
where is the z series available in the uk? is it only at the sony stores?
November 21st, 2008 at 6:19 pm
@Chandni – the Z Series is widely available. If you work out which model you’re particularly interested in (eg the VGN-Z21mn) then enter that name into Google Products you’ll find a big list of suppliers.
There are some versions that are only available at sonystyle.co.uk, but they tend to be special edition colours.
November 23rd, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Guys, I’m probably going to sound really stupid.
I am in desperate need of a tiny laptop I can stick in my handbag. I am self employed and need something I can use at home and in court. I live in central London, and need to source something fairly fast at a good price.
I have always had Vaios before, but larger laptops. I am certainly no tecchy. I got really interested in the Vaio TZ series earlier in the year but didn’t buy one, and am now quite excited about the Z series. I’ve been reading your reviews and I’m now totally confused. . . . All I want is something that runs Vista and all the usual standard stuff, is portable, light, fun(I like the carbon and fingerprint ID – sad!) . I don;t know where to start. Can anyone shed some light?
March 3rd, 2009 at 8:07 pm
this is one killer machine, i recently went for the SR series and am well impressed. light, fast and reliable
