Sony invents form factor no one asked for
All-in-one PCs still haven’t quite caught on, despite some great attempts such as Dell’s XPS One, but this one from Sony is verging on the ridiculous.
The VGC-LJ25L is only available in Korea for 1,399,000 KRW (around £680), and consists of a picture frame-style, glass- surround, 15.4in display with the usual 1,280 x 800 laptop resolution. With a discreetly hidden 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo T8100, 2GB of RAM and a 200GB hard disk, it’s actually a pretty capable PC.
But when you look at the photo below, we just can’t see the point. A half-laptop, half-PC, with a little bit of Sony’s VAIO VGC-LT2S styling thrown in, who exactly is going to want to carry it around? And more to the point, how do you carry it around without damaging the thing?!
“I know, let’s cut off half the keyboard!” might have sounded novel in that ideas meeting but we can’t see it reaching these shores anytime soon.

I want one! I’ve been thinkign about having a living room ‘information’ pc for ages.
Now it just needs to be touchscreen and the keyboard needs to tuck behind the screen!

This isn’t new – Sony have been selling this style of PC for ages, even in the UK. I think I first saw this form factor in my local Sony shop around 5 years ago.
The idea is that with the keyboard folded up you can still use it as a media player, and the exposed part of the screen dispays track information etc.
It’s nor meant to be carried around – it’s a “sit on the sideboard” PC.

I stand corrected – must have been a bit before my time here!
Even with that function in mind it still doesn’t appeal to me at all. And it’s rather expensive to just “sit on the sideboard”. Now if this sort of PC was as cheap as a hi-fi…

I’m afraid that “rather expensive” appears to be Sony’s strapline.
Although I’d like to add “…and not as good as we used to be.”
I used to be a Sony fan. In fact my house is still stuffed full of Sony stuff – they’ve had many many tens of tousands off me over the years. But I don;t think my next telly or laptop will be Sony.

From the picture it looks like a digital photo frame with a keyboard stuck to it.
